Or is it a fancy way for people to say they have a touchy stomach.

I was told that IBS is basically not a scientific disease. It is a collection of symptoms that are similar that can have all sorts of different causes. I had it but then I took Align GI. Align doesn't work for everyone. This guy had better luck with yogurt: http://www.thedeucediaries.blogspot.com

I have had abdominal pains for 6 weeks. Initially the dr's thought it was a UTI, but now they believe it be IBS. Anyone have any advice on how best to manage this. Thanks

I agree with Rhianna. The drug is very good if you are prescribed this please do not think they are giving it to you for depression. I have to take this drug at night to help with different kinds of pain.

Your diet will make a huge difference to how you are feeling. Plenty of water, fibre, low fat and reduced caffeine will help you considerably. Yet it is totally different for everyone so you'll need to pinpoint which foods make the condition worse.

I find high fatty foods make me very ill. Also you need to be careful of constipation and or Diarrhoea. I know it sounds awful but really you need to try and find what works to keep you working as it were!

Plenty of sleep and rest helps to maintain your sytem and try and reduce stress as this will also bring on attacks.

I really wish you well and do hope you can control this condition.

Stay happy, as pain free as poss and positive

It is fairly common and makes up 20–50% of visits to gastroenterologists. Lower abdominal pain, and bloating ociated with alteration of bowel habits and abdominal discomfort relieved with defecation are the most frequent symptoms.

IBS is highly prevalent in the Western world, but despite the advancement of many theories, no clear cause has yet been established.

Stress—feeling mentally or emotionally tense, troubled, angry, or overwhelmed—may trigger symptoms in people with IBS. One study found that women with IBS are more likely to report prior physical or sexual abuse; almost half of the patients reported prior abuse.

IBS is not fatal nor is it linked to the development of other serious bowel diseases. However, due to the chronic pain, discomfort, and other symptoms, work absenteeism, social phobias, and other negative quality-of-life effects can be common in more serious cases. Individuals who find a caring primary caregiver and/or sufficient self-help options should be able to develop a successful treatment program for their symptoms and lead normal lives.

I'm currently taking Bentyl 20mg. 4 times a day, but when I stop it comes back with vengeance. The reason I stop because I feel better, but isn't a lot of pills to take….

That is the same thing I have. With my IBS I usually have constipation so I started eating more fiber and increased my water intake and it help greatly. I have tried sticking to a better diet (limited fast food, fried foods,) and it also helped. I also reduced my stress.

Have you been tested for other conditions? I had an upper GI tract done and found out I also had a small problem with acid reflux.

Usually after two days it clears up and I'm good for a few months (if I'm lucky).

If you suffer from diarrhea you can take a Imodium with the bentyle.

What IBS means: —– Irritable bowel syndrome is understood as a multi-faceted disorder. In people with IBS, symptoms result from what appears to be a disturbance in the interaction between the gut or intestines, the brain, and the autonomic nervous system that alters regulation of bowel motility (motor function) or sensory function.

Irritable bowel syndrome is characterized by a group of symptoms in which abdominal pain or discomfort is associated with a change in bowel pattern, such as loose or more frequent bowel movements, diarrhea, and/or constipation.

People with IBS either have IBS with constipation or IBS with diarrhea. With constipation - try Zelnorm.

For diarrhea - if you're a younger female and have had this for a while, talk to your doctor about Lotronex. it's not on the market but it's extremely effective.
